Writing Tip Number 5

Using Notepad on your Computer

If your job requires you to spend a lot of time on the computer, keep the Notepad program open. Notepad is a word processing program found on PCs. I believe Macs come with Wordpad. Either way, keep that program open.

If you are like many writers, your writing projects are always on your mind; kind of like one of those programs on a computer which run in the background. The Notepad on your computer is similar to a pad and pen: it comes in handy to jot down quick ideas or snippets of dialogue, things that will only take a quick moment to make a note of.

This is NOT to suggest you attempt to write an entire novel while you’re at work. You need that job to pay the bills until you become a best-selling author. This is merely to make those quick notes of things you don’t want to forget.

At the end of the day, copy and paste all your notes into an email and send it to yourself at your personal email address. If your company does not allow you to email yourself, print out your notes and take them home where you can organize and work on them.

I have created an entire list of potential character names by doing this. Ironically, the names are actually typos I have come across or made myself in my data entry job.
